Villena Treasure theft sparks debate over museum security and replicas

The recent theft of the Villena Treasure from the Muvi museum has sparked a debate among experts regarding the conservation of cultural heritage and the security of public exhibits.

One proposed solution to prevent such incidents is for museums to display highly accurate replicas instead of original artifacts. While some institutions use replicas for traveling exhibitions or when originals are too fragile, many experts oppose making this a general practice. Rosa Castells, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante (MACA), argued that replacing originals with replicas could transform museums into 'theme parks' rather than authentic cultural institutions.

The debate follows similar security concerns raised after previous high-profile incidents, such as an assault at the Louvre.
