Villena Treasure theft triggers museum security alerts in Spain

The investigation into the theft of the Villena Treasure, one of Europe’s most significant Bronze Age gold collections, remains a top priority for the Guardia Civil. Following the robbery at the Villena Museum (Muvi) on August 27, Colonel Francisco Poyato of the Alicante Command stated that the investigation is progressing, though he urged discretion to avoid compromising the search for the perpetrators and the stolen pieces.

The theft has triggered increased security alerts across Spanish museums. In Valencia, the City Council has organized technical meetings to review and reinforce both active and passive security measures in municipal museums and monuments. This follows a trend of recent thefts in other Spanish locations, such as Badajoz and Albacete, as well as an international incident at the Renoir Museum in France.
