Vilnius District Council to reconsider street renaming

The Vilnius District Municipality Council is set to attempt a third vote on renaming streets currently named after Henrikas Gulbinovičius. The administration stated that resubmitting the projects aims to follow good public administration practices and save administrative costs following ongoing litigation.

The Regional Administrative Court is currently reviewing a case where a government representative is seeking to annul previous decisions regarding the street names. The proposed changes would rename streets in the Buivydžiai eldership and Nemenčinė to Buivydžiai and Gabrielus Janas Mincevičius, respectively.

Vilnius District Mayor Robertas Duchnevičius expressed a moral obligation to reconsider the renaming. Previous attempts to pass the measure in February and April were unsuccessful. The controversy stems from the legacy of Gulbinovičius, a former Archbishop of Wrocław and cardinal, who faced Vatican disciplinary sanctions following allegations of sexual abuse of minors and covering up pedophilia crimes.
