Vilnius launches smart traffic‑light system to cut congestion

Vilnius is rolling out a city‑wide smart traffic‑light system developed with JUDU and the Czech company Cross. The first phase introduces the eDaptiva traffic‑control software, which synchronises signals in real time, forecasts traffic flows and gives priority to public‑transport vehicles. Early tests on the Nemenčinė corridor show morning‑peak waiting times cut to 19 minutes, a reduction of about half, and pedestrians receive green signals up to 30 seconds sooner.

Mayor Valdas Benkunskas said the system makes the city safer and more reliable, while JUDU’s Loreta Levulytė‑Staškevičienė highlighted the adaptive corridor module that will later expand to other major streets. The project also includes planned upgrades of physical infrastructure – new signal heads, sensors, cabling and cyber‑security measures – across three stages, with contracts already signed for design work on 95 intersections.
