Vilnius waste‑management dispute triggers anti‑corruption probe
Former Vilnius mayor Artūras Zuokas has asked Lithuania’s Anti‑Corruption Commission to examine a conflict between the Vilnius County Waste Management Centre (VAATC) and the operator of the municipal waste‑treatment plant, UAB Energesman. The complaint argues that the dispute, which involves EU‑ and state‑funded infrastructure worth tens of millions of euros, may affect the public interest, local waste‑fee rates and the transparency of decisions about a new waste‑management model.
Energesman says it received an offer from the competing firm Ecoservice to sell shares, rejected the proposal and two days later VAATC terminated its contract for the mechanical‑biological treatment (MBA) plant. A district court ordered VAATC to prevent Energesman from obstructing access to the plant and, on the same day, VAATC took over its operation. The company alleges the termination was linked to a new VAATC director halting all payments and financing arrangements, and it plans to refer the matter to prosecutors.
