Vilvoorde Implements Heatwave Protection Plan for Vulnerable Residents
The Flemish government’s “Warme Dagen” campaign urges municipalities to act against rising summer temperatures. In response, the city of Vilvoorde has launched a local action plan aimed at protecting elderly people and those in vulnerable socio‑economic situations.
The plan includes distributing flyers and targeted letters, providing free drinking water at several community centres, and handing out water bottles. The Social House contacts residents over 85 years old with heat‑safety tips and encourages neighbours to check on older adults. Officials also advise wearing light clothing, using sunscreen, staying hydrated, and seeking shade, while warning that symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, or loss of consciousness may indicate heatstroke and require emergency assistance.
General guidance from health authorities recommends keeping homes cool by closing windows during the hottest part of the day, drinking ample water, avoiding alcohol and sugary drinks, and limiting exposure for pets and infants.
