Vinh Long flooding damages crops in Hoa Hiep commune

Flooding in Hoa Hiep commune, Vinh Long province, has caused significant damage to approximately 10 hectares of crops and fruit trees belonging to 22 households. The incident specifically devastated 1.5 hectares of watermelon crops, which were just 10 days away from harvest. Farmers report that much of the expected 30-ton yield has rotted, with estimated losses for the watermelon fields alone reaching nearly 200 million VND.

The flooding was triggered by the operation of the Don 2 sluice gate on Road 904. Local authorities stated that the gate was opened completely on the evening of October 15, causing water to rush into production areas. Preliminary findings suggest the cause was linked to inexperienced operators who were unfamiliar with the local terrain and water regulation procedures. Local officials are currently assessing the total extent of the damage to develop support plans for the affected residents.
