Violence against women rises in Colombia and Honduras
Reports from Colombia and Honduras highlight critical levels of violence against women. In Colombia, the Defensoría del Pueblo reported 89 femicides, 74 attempted femicides, and 20 transfemicides between January 1 and July 31, 2026. Additionally, 57,860 cases of domestic violence against women were recorded during this period. High concentrations of femicides were noted in the departments of Putumayo, Guaviare, Quindío, and Nariño.
In Honduras, emergency calls regarding domestic violence have surged, with 47,215 calls recorded in the first six months of 2026, already surpassing the total for all of 2025. Despite the high volume of emergency reports, there is a significant gap in judicial outcomes; the Fiscalía de la Mujer recorded only 176 formal requests and 33 sentences during the same period, illustrating a major bottleneck in the path to justice.
