Violence erupts at Venezuela's Rodeo I prison after earthquakes

Human‑rights groups say prison officials used force against inmates at the Rodeo I penitentiary in Miranda, Venezuela, when they refused to return to damaged cells following the twin earthquakes of 24 June. On 5 July, guards allegedly beat prisoners with rubber‑bullet fire, deployed tear‑gas, and injured many, while families report at least seven political detainees have gone missing.

The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (CLIPPVE) documented injuries ranging from visible bruises to severe gastrointestinal bleeding, and warned that structural damage to the prison’s columns threatens inmate safety amid ongoing aftershocks. The organization demanded immediate medical care, access for lawyers and independent monitors, and proof that the missing prisoners are alive.
