Viper bites in France prompt medical reminders

Recent incidents involving viper bites in France have highlighted the medical risks associated with the country's only venomous snake species. European MEP Manon Aubry recently shared that she was hospitalized following a viper bite.

In a separate incident in Avignon-lès-Saint-Claude, a 62-year-old man required intensive care after being bitten by a 50-centimeter viper during a walk. He reported rapid onset of symptoms, including a feeling of compression in his head.

On average, France records approximately 300 viper bites annually, with roughly three deaths per year. Vipers are distinguishable from non-venomous grass snakes by their triangular heads. Common symptoms of a venomous bite include intense pain at the site, swelling, and redness. Experts advise against using antivenom kits, as they can delay professional medical treatment.
