Viper bite incidents in France
Overview
Recent viper bite incidents in France have drawn attention to the medical risks posed by the country’s only venomous snake species. European Parliament member Manon Aubry was hospitalized and required intensive care following a bite, an event that forced her to cancel certain political engagements. She has since reported complications related to poisoning.
In a separate case in Avignon-lès-Saint-Claude, a 62-year-old man was admitted to intensive care after being bitten by a 50-centimeter viper during a walk. He reported a rapid onset of symptoms, including a feeling of compression in his head.
Medical experts note that while France records approximately 300 such bites annually, resulting in roughly three deaths per year, victims should seek professional medical treatment immediately. Symptoms of venomous bites can include intense pain, swelling, redness, digestive issues, cardiovascular distress, or neurological complications such as facial paralysis and respiratory difficulties. Vipers can be distinguished from non-venomous grass snakes by their triangular heads.
Recommended first aid includes cleaning the wound with soap and water and removing restrictive clothing or jewelry to accommodate swelling. Experts warn against using tourniquets, attempting to suck out venom, applying ice, or using antivenom kits, as these actions can be ineffective or delay critical medical intervention.
