Virgin festivals in Ecuador and Bolivia draw thousands of pilgrims

In Ecuador, the annual pilgrimage to the Virgen del Quinche sanctuary in Pichincha province attracts thousands of faithful each November. Pilgrims travel on foot, by bicycle or vehicle to honor the wooden image of the Virgin, a patron of indigenous communities, and participate in cultural fairs, concerts and traditional dances.

In Bolivia, the Festividad de la Virgen de Urcupiña began with a solemn procession that brought the sacred image to the Casa Departamental de Cultura in Cochabamba. The event, led by clergy and civil authorities, included a Mass and prayers for the nation’s social and economic challenges, while devotees sought blessings for health, work and daily subsistence. Both celebrations underscore the enduring religious devotion and cultural identity in the Andean region.
