Andean Virgin pilgrimage festivals

In mid‑July, coverage highlighted two major Andean religious celebrations: the annual Virgen del Quinche pilgrimage in Ecuador’s Pichincha province and the Festividad de la Virgen de Urkupiña in Bolivia. Both events were described as deeply rooted in local cultural identity, drawing thousands of devotees who travel on foot, bicycle or vehicle to venerate the revered images and participate in fairs, concerts and traditional dances.

By the end of July, reporting shifted to a detailed account of the Bolivian festival. The transfer of the Virgin of Urkupiña’s image from the San Ildefonso temple in Quillacollo to Cochabamba marked the official start of festivities running from 31 July to 16 August. The schedule now includes a children’s entry, a Marian advocations procession, an indigenous entry, a large folkloric procession (a departmental holiday), a solemn mass, a central feast, and a pilgrimage to the Calvary. Authorities coordinated logistics for thousands of pilgrims, patients and visitors, and noted the event’s contribution to tourism and the local economy.
