Virgin Trains considers Stratford International stop for new European services

Virgin Trains is exploring the possibility of adding Stratford International as a stop for its upcoming cross-Channel rail services, potentially ending Eurostar’s long-standing monopoly on the route. Following preliminary approval from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) for a new track access agreement, Virgin plans to operate up to 20 daily return services between London and destinations including Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam starting in October 2030.

The expansion could significantly impact East London, with local MP Sir Stephen Timms noting that international services would provide a “big and fast growing commercial opportunity” to boost regional regeneration. Virgin has indicated plans to invest £700 million in the project, which includes creating hundreds of jobs at the Temple Mills depot in East London.

While the ORR has granted access to London St Pancras High Speed, Virgin still needs to secure track access through the Channel Tunnel and within European rail networks, as well as obtain necessary safety approvals. The company is also reportedly considering stops at Ebbsfleet International and Ashford to restore services lost during the 2020 pandemic.
