Virginia issues Code Red air quality alert as Canadian wildfire smoke spreads across the region

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality declared a Code Red air quality alert for Northern Virginia on Friday, July 17, after smoke from more than 800 wildfires in Canada moved southeastward over the Great Lakes into the Mid‑Atlantic. The alert signals unhealthy pollution levels for the general population and prompted Arlington County to move all outdoor parks and recreation programs indoors or cancel them for the day.

The smoke plume, intensified by hot temperatures and drought conditions, was forecast to reach Code Purple (extremely unhealthy) in the northern tip of the state, Code Red across most of Northern Virginia and the Richmond area, and Code Orange (unhealthy for sensitive groups) around Roanoke. Vulnerable groups—including children, older adults, and people with heart or lung disease—were advised to limit outdoor activity. Temperatures in the region were expected to remain in the 90s, while scattered thunderstorms were projected to gradually reduce smoke concentrations over the weekend.
