Virginia reports 10 fatalities in eight Labor Day holiday crashes

Ten people died in eight separate crashes across Virginia during the 2026 Labor Day holiday weekend. Among the fatalities were three pedestrians in Emporia, Fairfax, and Alexandria, as well as three individuals killed in a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 66 in Fairfax County.

The fatal I-66 crash occurred on Sunday afternoon when a Toyota 4Runner and a commercial vehicle carrying oxygen tanks stopped in the westbound Express Lanes after the 4Runner struck lane bollards. A Honda Pilot subsequently struck the commercial truck, causing the Honda to catch fire. All three occupants of the Honda, including a juvenile, died at the scene. Authorities have charged the drivers of the Toyota, Walter R. Juarez Bautista, and the commercial vehicle, Jesus Huaman, with reckless driving.

As part of the state-sponsored Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort), Virginia State Police increased patrols throughout the holiday. During the period, troopers issued 2,823 speeding citations and 1,571 reckless driving citations. Additionally, 74 people were charged with driving under the influence, 514 seat belt violations were recorded, and 94 child restraint violations were noted.
