Virginia school shooting bodycam footage released

Newly released bodycam footage has surfaced regarding a January 2023 incident at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, where a first-grade student shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner.

The footage shows a reading specialist holding the six-year-old boy down as police arrive. During the encounter, the child reportedly used profanity, dared officers to fight him, and admitted to stealing a firearm from his mother. A school official noted in the video that the school had received warnings regarding a threat involving the boy earlier that same day.

Abby Zwerner survived the shooting but has faced ongoing medical issues. She previously secured a $10 million civil verdict after a jury determined that a former school administrator had ignored warnings that the child might possess a weapon.
