Richneck Elementary School shooting investigation

Overview

In October 2026, newly unsealed body-camera footage was released regarding a January 2023 shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. The footage, recorded by Officer Brian Torrez, depicts the immediate aftermath of the incident where a six-year-old student shot his first-grade teacher, Abigail Zwerner.

The video shows a reading specialist, Amy Kovac, restraining the child as police arrive. During the encounter, the boy reportedly used profanities, issued verbal threats, and admitted to taking a 9mm Taurus handgun from his mother. One report notes that school officials had received warnings regarding a threat involving the boy earlier on the day of the shooting.

Abigail Zwerner sustained serious injuries, including a punctured lung and broken bones. She later secured a $10 million civil judgment in a gross negligence lawsuit after a jury determined a former school administrator had ignored warnings that the child might possess a weapon. The child’s mother, Deja Taylor, was previously sentenced to prison for felony child neglect and firearm-related charges.
