Virginia State Sen. L. Louise Lucas indicted in marijuana trafficking case

The Department of Justice has indicted Virginia State Senator L. Louise Lucas, 82, on charges related to an alleged marijuana trafficking operation known as the ‘Lucas Enterprise’. Lucas, who has served in the state Senate since 1990 and has held the position of president pro tempore since 2020, is accused of using her political influence to protect the interests of the enterprise.

The indictment includes charges of racketeering conspiracy, marijuana distribution, money laundering, bribery-related offenses, fraud, and drug-related firearms offenses. Federal officials estimate the alleged scheme was worth approximately $4.5 million over a five-year period. Prosecutors also allege that in August 2022, Lucas paid $750,000 for a stake in a shell company intended to hold a recreational marijuana license, an interest she allegedly failed to report on required economic disclosure forms.

Lucas, along with six co-defendants including her daughter, Lisa Lucas-Burke, was arrested on Thursday. Lucas has denied the allegations, characterizing the prosecution as politically motivated, and her attorney stated she intends to plead not guilty.
