Virginia Senator Louise Lucas indicted in federal marijuana trafficking case

Virginia State Senator L. Louise Lucas, 82, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges including racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to distribute marijuana, money laundering, and bribery. Prosecutors allege that Lucas led a criminal enterprise, referred to as the “Lucas Enterprise,” which involved the acquisition and distribution of at least 100 kilograms of marijuana.

The indictment claims Lucas used her influential position as Chairwoman of the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee to shield the operation from law enforcement scrutiny and to influence legislation for personal and family financial gain. Authorities estimate the alleged scheme is worth approximately $4.5 million. The group of seven defendants includes Lucas’s daughters, Lisa Lucas-Burke and Theresa Lucas-Lamb, and her grandson, Ryan Eichelberger.

Lucas self-surrendered to law enforcement on Thursday morning. She has denied the allegations, characterizing the federal investigation and subsequent indictment as political intimidation and an attempt to silence her. The charges follow FBI searches conducted in May at Lucas’s legislative office and a cannabis shop she co-owns, during which agents reportedly recovered marijuana and firearms.
