Virginia Tech researchers convert PVC plastic waste into lubricant components
Researchers at Virginia Tech have developed a new chemical process to convert polyvinyl chloride (PVC) into polyalphaolefin, a critical component used in synthetic lubricants and engine oils. The study, published in the journal Nature, addresses the environmental challenge of PVC, which is notoriously difficult to recycle due to its chlorine content and varying manufacturer additives.
The conversion process involves placing PVC waste—such as discarded pipes, window frames, or credit cards—into a solvent with aluminum trichloride and alpha-olefins. The mixture is heated to approximately 158 degrees Fahrenheit (70 degrees Celsius) for three hours, resulting in a viscous liquid that can be used as a high-performance lubricant.
Lead researcher Guoliang “Greg” Liu noted that the process aims to turn a common landfill waste into a valuable industrial material. By upcycling difficult-to-recycle plastics into essential machinery components, the method provides a sustainable way to meet the growing global demand for lubricants while reducing plastic pollution.
