Researchers at Virginia Tech have developed a chemical process to convert polyvinyl chloride (PVC) waste into high-quality lubricating oil. The method, detailed in the journal Nature, addresses the difficulty of recycling PVC due to its chlorine content and various additives.
The process involves removing chlorine and breaking down long plastic chains into shorter molecules. Specifically, the technique utilizes a solvent containing aluminum trichloride and alpha-olefins, heating the mixture to approximately 158 degrees Fahrenheit (70 degrees Celsius) for three hours.
The resulting product is a high-grade base oil or polyalphaolefin, comparable to materials used in high-performance engine, machinery, and turbine oils. Lead researcher Guoliang “Greg” Liu stated the process aims to turn common landfill waste into valuable industrial materials, providing a sustainable way to meet lubricant demand while reducing plastic pollution.
