Polish national Bartłomiej Włodzimierz Krakowiak admitted to vandalising the Medjugorje shrine, defacing Virgin Mary statues, spraying black paint on the images and setting fire to the outdoor altar of the Church of St James. He also poured flammable liquid on the altar and wrote insulting messages on the statues, claiming his actions were meant to expose what he believes are fraudulent claims by the Medjugorje visionaries.

The State Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia‑Herzegovina has asked a court to impose pre‑trial detention, citing a risk of flight and a risk that Krakowiak could repeat the offence. The hearing before the Court of Bosnia‑Herzegovina lasted about fifteen minutes, after which the judges were to decide on the detention request. Krakowiak was arrested in Cerno near Ljubuški on Tuesday, a little before 13:00.

Krakowiak maintains that he did not intend to hurt anyone and that his motive was to draw public attention to alleged fraud. His defence lawyer has denied any intent to cause harm. The court has set the possible period of detention up to 28 August 2026, pending a final decision.
