Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv join alliance for AI agent payments
The financial and technology sectors are rapidly pivoting toward agentic commerce, a model where autonomous AI agents perform transactions on behalf of users. To manage this shift, major payment providers including Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv have joined the Agentic Payments Alliance (APA). Organized by the stablecoin infrastructure company Rain, the coalition aims to establish industry standards for AI agent identity, fraud prevention, and machine-to-machine payment frameworks before formal government regulation is implemented.
As enterprises move from AI experimentation to production-grade autonomous agents, new infrastructure is emerging to address security and trust. Companies like Experian have launched frameworks to verify consumer-to-agent links, while others are developing registries to score agent behavior. This development follows projections that agentic commerce could reach a market value of $3 to $5 trillion by 2030.
However, the transition faces significant hurdles. Organizations are struggling with the high costs of AI, unexpected spikes in token spending, and the need for real-time data foundations to prevent agent errors. Experts emphasize that successful scaling will require robust governance, real-time fact-verification tools to combat hallucinations, and a focus on human-led decision-making to ensure accountability in high-stakes workflows.
