Vision assistance programs expand access to eyewear in Portugal and Spain
Regional health initiatives in Portugal and Spain are providing financial assistance for vision correction. In Madeira, the '+Visão Seniores' program has supported over 5,100 elderly residents since 2019. The program offers a 150-euro subsidy for prescription glasses to retirees with pensions below 805.70 euros. In the first half of 2026, 441 people utilized the aid, with the majority being women and the average age being 74.
In Spain, the 'Plan VEO' provides up to 100 euros per person for glasses or contact lenses for children and adolescents up to age 16. This initiative, active until December 31, 2026, aims to facilitate access to vision correction for those with diagnosed refractive errors. Local optical professionals note an increase in myopia cases among youth, though seasonal spending on school supplies can impact the timing of these purchases.
