Eye health and vision care initiatives in Spain, PT and AR
Overview
Efforts to improve adolescent and public eye health have expanded through both financial subsidies and educational campaigns.
In Spain, the second phase of the Plan Veo provides up to 100 euros annually for children and adolescents up to age 16 to purchase corrective eyewear and lenses. This program, which remains active until December 31, 2026, has received an additional 23 million euro investment, bringing total funding to 73 million euros. Local optical professionals have noted an increase in myopia cases among youth, though they observe that seasonal spending on school supplies can influence the timing of these purchases. Complementing these financial measures, the General Council of Pharmaceutical Colleges of Spain launched the ‘Farmacia y Salud Ocular’ initiative, an educational campaign using monthly video advisories to promote early detection of ocular pathologies and address digital eye strain.
In Portugal, the ‘+Visão Seniores’ program in Madeira has supported over 5,100 elderly residents since 2019. The initiative offers a 150-euro subsidy for prescription glasses to retirees with pensions below 805.70 euros. In the first half of 2026, 441 people utilized the aid, with the majority being women and an average age of 74.
In Argentina, the Plan de Salud Visual is utilizing mobile units in the Neuquén province to provide ophthalmological checks and free glasses. These mobile units serve as optical laboratories, offering visual acuity tests and immediate delivery of prescription glasses to adolescents aged 10 to 17 who lack health insurance.
