VisitBritain reports Middle East tension slowed Australian tourism
VisitBritain CEO Patricia Yates has reported that ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East caused a slowdown in Australian travel bookings to the United Kingdom. Because approximately half of the connecting flight routes from Australia pass through the Middle East, regional instability created travel hesitation among potential visitors.
Despite this recent dip, the national tourism office views the slowdown as a temporary issue rather than a long-term trend. VisitBritain expects 1.14 million Australian visitors this year, generating approximately £1.7 billion in spending. Projections for 2027 are more optimistic, with forecasts suggesting a record-breaking £1.8 billion in spending from 1.25 million visitors.
Recovery signs include increased airline capacity, such as Emirates restoring capacity and upcoming route launches from British Airways and Qantas. Yates noted that Australian travelers remain high-value visitors, typically staying longer and spending more than the market average. A key strategic focus for VisitBritain is encouraging these travelers, many of whom visit friends and relatives, to explore regions beyond London.
