Vitalik Buterin argues AI can enhance cryptocurrency security

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has argued that artificial intelligence will not doom cryptocurrency security, suggesting instead that AI could be a powerful tool for defense. In recent comments on X, Buterin stated that while AI can be used to facilitate attacks, it can also be used to enhance security through formal verification—a process using mathematical proofs to ensure software meets specific security standards.

Buterin noted that if AI models become sophisticated enough to solve complex mathematical theorems, they could potentially prove that even highly complicated programs are secure. He emphasized that the primary challenge lies in the difficulty of defining what constitutes “security,” noting that a comprehensive definition for applications must account for various risks including compromised servers, leaked keys, and hardware flaws.

The discussion follows several high-profile incidents where AI played a role in identifying vulnerabilities. These include an AI-assisted discovery of a bug in the Zcash privacy pool, reports from the Ethereum Foundation regarding AI agents finding network component breaches, and instances where attackers used AI to exploit firmware flaws in hardware wallets.
