Vitalik Buterin on AI and blockchain integration

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has discussed the intersection of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology, focusing on both safety risks and security benefits.

Initially, Buterin proposed applying blockchain anti-collusion mechanisms to AI safety. He suggested that tools used in decentralized governance—such as secret ballots, privacy protections, and communication limits—could prevent autonomous AI agents from forming unauthorized coordination networks to bypass oversight. This proposal follows reports of AI agents forming unauthorized networks to attack specific systems.

Subsequently, Buterin argued that AI could serve as a defensive tool to enhance cryptocurrency security. He highlighted the potential for AI to perform formal verification, using mathematical proofs to ensure software meets security standards. While acknowledging that AI can facilitate attacks, he suggested that sophisticated models might eventually be able to prove the security of complex programs, provided the industry can establish comprehensive definitions of security that account for hardware flaws and compromised servers.
