Justin Drake warns AI could break Bitcoin and Ethereum cryptography
Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has issued a warning to the cryptocurrency industry, suggesting that advancements in artificial intelligence could compromise the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) used by Bitcoin and Ethereum. Drake posits that AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs could allow attackers to recover private keys from public keys in as little as a week using large GPU clusters, potentially occurring within months rather than the years traditionally expected for quantum computing threats.
To mitigate this risk, Drake proposed a ‘bunker mode,’ which involves a controlled migration of assets to fresh wallet addresses where the public keys remain hidden behind a cryptographic hash. This strategy aims to prevent attackers from having the necessary data to attempt key recovery.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin acknowledged the validity of the cryptographic risk but cautioned against panic-driven, hasty migrations, noting that operational errors during such moves could lead to permanent asset loss. Buterin expressed a preference for long-term transitions to hash-based cryptography rather than lattice-based methods, which he suggested might also be vulnerable to AI-driven mathematical progress.
