Vitalik Buterin proposes EIP-8288 to enhance Ethereum scalability
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed EIP-8288, a new system utilizing recursive STARK proofs to optimize how the network processes transactions. The proposal aims to bundle transaction-related computations, shifting much of the processing away from the main execution path to reduce the load on the mainnet.
This upgrade is intended for the planned I-Star fork, which follows the Hegota upgrade. By using recursive STARKs, the network could significantly lower the costs associated with implementing post-quantum cryptography, such as Falcon and ML-DSA, while also supporting private transactions and account abstraction.
To implement this, Buterin suggested that Ethereum might adopt RISC-V as a common programming language for the recursive STARKs. This move aligns with the Ethereum Foundation’s goal to achieve quantum resistance across its execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029.
