Vitalik Buterin warns AI advancements threaten blockchain privacy

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, warned at the 12th Global Blockchain Summit that advancements in artificial intelligence are making traditional blockchain privacy protections insufficient. He argued that simply using a pseudonym or a wallet address is no longer enough to ensure anonymity, as AI can analyze transaction metadata—such as timestamps, transaction sizes, and behavioral patterns—to create a digital fingerprint and link wallet activity to real-world identities.

Buterin noted that public blockchains function much like “Twitter for your bank account,” where significant financial activity remains visible for analysis. To combat these risks, he proposed the implementation of “programmable privacy.” This approach utilizes modern cryptographic techniques to allow users granular control over their data. Instead of a binary choice between full transparency and total concealment, programmable privacy would enable users to selectively disclose specific information, such as proving they possess sufficient funds for a transaction without revealing their entire account balance.
