Vitamin D and iron: Understanding nutrient absorption and deficiency risks
Vitamin D plays a critical role in bone metabolism by promoting the absorption of calcium and phosphate. While the body produces approximately 80 percent of its needs through sunlight, deficiency is common, particularly in winter months or among specific risk groups such as individuals with limited sun exposure, darker skin pigmentation, or certain chronic gastrointestinal and kidney conditions.
Medical experts note that Vitamin D levels are measured via 25-hydroxyvitamin D serum values. While reference ranges vary between international institutions, the Robert Koch Institute suggests an optimal level between 30 and 50 ng/ml. Deficiencies can lead to serious conditions such as rickets in children or osteoporosis in adults.
Regarding nutrient interaction, research suggests that Vitamin D may positively influence iron metabolism. Specifically, Vitamin D may lower hepcidin levels—a peptide produced in the liver that inhibits iron absorption—thereby potentially improving how the body processes iron. This differs from other nutrients like calcium or magnesium, which typically require a two-to-three-hour gap from iron supplementation to avoid interference.
