Vitamin D deficiency and abdominal obesity increase mortality risk
A study conducted by researchers from the Federal University of Sao Carlos and University College London has found that the combination of abdominal obesity and vitamin D deficiency significantly increases the risk of premature death. Published in the journal ‘Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism’, the research highlights that for individuals over the age of 50, these two factors can exacerbate one another by promoting chronic inflammation and weakening the immune system.
According to the findings, vitamin D deficiency alone is associated with a 91 percent increase in premature mortality risk, while abdominal obesity alone increases the risk by 47 percent. When both conditions are present, the risk of premature death rises by 123 percent.
Regarding the management of vitamin D levels, the duration required to correct a deficiency depends on an individual's body weight and the severity of the deficiency. Clinical guidelines suggest that a serum level below 12 ng/ml indicates a deficiency, which can lead to serious issues such as bone diseases, including rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults.
