Health factors linked to premature mortality in seniors
Overview
Research has identified a significant link between abdominal obesity and vitamin D deficiency regarding mortality risks in older populations. Studies involving individuals aged 50 and older indicate that while vitamin D deficiency alone is associated with a 91 percent increase in premature mortality risk and abdominal obesity alone increases risk by 47 percent, the presence of both conditions simultaneously raises the risk of premature death by 123 percent.
Researchers suggest these two factors may exacerbate one another by promoting chronic inflammation and weakening the immune system. Additionally, it has been proposed that excess fat may sequester vitamin D, reducing its availability in the bloodstream.
