Emory University study links high-dose Vitamin D to improved cognition
A study conducted by researchers at Emory University suggests that high-dose Vitamin D supplementation may be linked to improved cognitive performance in adults experiencing sleep disturbances and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
The research, published in the journal Sleep Medicine, examined 54 adults aged 50 and older. Participants who reported taking at least 5,000 IU of Vitamin D daily scored over 13% higher on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) compared to those who took no supplements. This performance gap remained significant even after adjusting for variables such as age, sex, BMI, and education level.
Senior author Associate Professor Victoria Pak noted that the period involving both sleep disorders and MCI may represent a “critical intervention window” where brain health can still be supported. The study found no significant difference in cognitive benefits between Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3 forms. Researchers emphasized that while these preliminary results are promising, further large-scale studies are needed to confirm whether high-dose supplementation can effectively slow the progression of dementia.
