Vitamin D supplementation linked to improved cognitive scores in new study
A study by Emory University researchers has identified a potential link between vitamin D supplementation and improved cognitive function. The research, published in Sleep Medicine, analyzed 54 adults experiencing sleep issues and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Participants who consumed at least 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily achieved scores on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) that were over 13% higher than those who did not use supplements.
While the study shows a strong association, researchers noted it does not definitively prove that high doses of vitamin D caused the cognitive improvement. Notably, lower doses of the vitamin were not associated with significant cognitive benefits.
Vitamin D is critical for calcium absorption and maintaining bone and muscle health. The European Food Safety Authority recommends a daily intake of 15 micrograms for adults and children over one year old. A severe deficiency can lead to rickets in children or osteomalacia in adults. Because very few foods naturally contain significant amounts of vitamin D, experts recommend fatty fish—such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines—as well as egg yolks and UV-exposed mushrooms as primary dietary sources.
