Vitamin D supplementation shows potential for Multiple Sclerosis patients

A systematic review and network meta-analysis of 32 randomized controlled trials suggests that long-term Vitamin D supplementation may serve as an effective adjuvant therapy for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The study indicates that supplementing Vitamin D can reduce the risk of relapses and slow disability progression without compromising safety. Researchers recommend considering supplementation specifically for MS patients with existing Vitamin D deficiencies.

Vitamin D deficiency is a widespread issue, affecting nearly 60 percent of the German population according to the German Nutrition Society. While many do not have a severe deficiency, many fail to reach the recommended blood level of 50 nanomoles per liter. High-risk groups include the elderly, individuals with limited sun exposure, those living in care facilities, and infants. Additionally, factors such as darker skin pigmentation and the use of sunscreens can reduce the body's ability to synthesize Vitamin D through UV-B radiation.
