Vitamin D3 supplementation linked to slower cellular aging
A randomized clinical trial from the VITAL study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests that daily vitamin D3 supplementation may influence biological aging. Researchers found that individuals taking 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily experienced significantly less loss in telomere length over a four-year period compared to a placebo group. Telomeres, the protective structures at the ends of chromosomes, typically shorten as cells divide; shorter telomeres are often used as markers for cellular aging.
To maximize the effectiveness of vitamin D supplements, experts note that absorption is highly dependent on dietary habits. Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, it should be consumed with a meal containing moderate amounts of fat, such as eggs, avocado, nuts, or fatty fish, rather than on an empty stomach or with fat-free products. Additionally, extremely high fiber intake at the exact time of supplementation may interfere with nutrient absorption.
