Vitamin supplementation: Benefits for bone health and risks of overdose

Health experts are providing guidance on the benefits and risks of vitamin supplementation. While a nutrient-rich diet is generally sufficient for most people, specific groups may require additional intake to prevent health issues.

For women in menopause and men over the age of 70, vitamin D supplementation is recommended to maintain bone density. Vitamin D acts as a necessary vehicle to ensure calcium is properly absorbed into the bones. In certain regions, such as the Netherlands, calcium intake through dairy is often sufficient, making vitamin D the critical factor for bone health.

However, experts warn against the misconception that more vitamins are always better. Overconsumption through supplements can lead to serious side effects. Specifically, some studies suggest that excessive intake of certain vitamins may increase the risk of lung cancer. Organizations like the German Cancer Research Center note that while vitamin D may reduce cancer mortality, other antioxidant supplements lack sufficient evidence for cancer prevention and may pose risks if taken in excess.
