Viterbo bans drinking water after enterococci exceed legal limits

On 4 June 2026 the municipality of Viterbo (Italy) issued an ordinance prohibiting the consumption of tap water for drinking or food preparation in the areas served by the Centro 480 network. Tests carried out by ARPA Lazio on a sample taken from a public fountain on via Carlo Cattaneo showed enterococci concentrations above the legal threshold, indicating recent fecal contamination. The ban applies to the neighbourhoods of Cappuccini, Murialdo, Pila, Barco, Grotticella, Mazzetta, Pietrare, Ponte dell'Elce and the streets Cassia Sud, Filante and Buon Respiro. Residents may use the water for domestic hygiene except tooth‑brushing, and must boil it for 10‑15 minutes before cooking or washing food. The water manager Talete must implement corrective measures and the restriction remains in force until new samples confirm compliance.
