Michoacán avocado sector reinforces security and environmental standards
The government of Michoacán and the Association of Avocado Producers and Export Packers (Apeam) have established a collaborative framework to address security, environmental, and phytosanitary issues within the avocado sector. This initiative follows a period of security instability that led the United States to temporarily suspend inspections in the region due to organized crime threats.
To protect the production chain, the federal government has deployed approximately 9,500 personnel from the Army, Air Force, and National Guard across Michoacán, with 1,500 members specifically assigned to secure the production, transport, packaging, and inspection processes. Additionally, the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) is establishing a regional fusion and intelligence center in Uruapan to coordinate security efforts.
Following these security reinforcements, Washington has announced the resumption of inspection activities and imports. Beyond security, the collaboration aims to ensure environmental traceability, with Apeam and state authorities working to guarantee that production does not stem from deforested areas and that soil health is maintained.
