Eastern Economic Forum: Putin highlights Russia-China ties and Ukraine peace prospects
The 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) is currently taking place in Vladivostok, Russia, from September 1 to 4. During the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the unprecedented nature of Russia-China relations, noting that bilateral trade reached nearly $240 billion in 2025 and could reach new records in 2026.
Energy cooperation remains a central pillar of the partnership. Russian officials announced preparations for a new natural gas supply route through the Far East to China, alongside ongoing discussions regarding the Power of Siberia projects and Arctic liquefied natural gas ventures. Cooperation in peaceful nuclear energy and advanced technology was also highlighted.
On the geopolitical front, Putin addressed the conflict in Ukraine, stating that a diplomatic resolution remains possible if both Russia and Ukraine reach an agreement directly. He expressed gratitude to nations like China and the United States for their interest in the peace process but noted that contacts currently continue primarily through security services. Putin also accused Western-backed actions against civilian vessels and aviation of constituting state terrorism.
Other regional participants include leaders from Indonesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, and China. The forum has facilitated hundreds of agreements, totaling trillions of rubles, aimed at developing the Russian Far East and enhancing Eurasian connectivity through infrastructure, digital networks, and multimodal transport corridors.
