Vladimir Putin says Ukraine cannot cripple Russia's energy sector
President Vladimir Putin told his government that Kyiv’s attempts to create panic in Russian society are impossible, emphasizing that Russia’s energy system is highly resilient and one of the world’s largest. Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Russia has imposed a total ban on diesel exports and is negotiating lower rail tariffs to aid domestic fuel distribution. He noted that Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have damaged several plants, reducing output and tightening fuel supplies, while demand for fuel has risen by about a third compared with last year, leading to longer queues at petrol stations.
Putin also warned that continued Ukrainian strikes on Crimea, Russian logistics routes and energy infrastructure could force Russia to consider further escalation. He acknowledged recent Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian energy and other targets have caused fuel shortages, prompting temporary increases in fuel imports and leading to internet outages and other inconveniences for Russian citizens.
