Vladimir Putin swaps senior Russian commanders in Donbas war
President Vladimir Putin announced a reshuffle of Russian military leadership in Ukraine after the offensive in the Donbas region slowed. He removed General Valery Solodchuk from command of the "Center" grouping and appointed Colonel Andrei Ivanayev as its new commander. Colonel Piotr Bolgarev was named commander of the "East" (Vostok) grouping.
Solodchuk was reassigned to head the Joint Logistics Service of the Ministry of Defense. The changes follow data from the OSINT project DeepState showing Russian forces captured only 88 km² in July, 57 km² in June and suffered a net loss of 11 km² in May, far below the earlier monthly gains of 126‑245 km².
Kremlin officials are also considering a new mobilization in September. Media reports estimate Russian military casualties have reached about 1.4 million killed and wounded by mid‑year.
