Putin and Pezeshkian meet in Turkmenistan to discuss strategic ties and Middle East conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met in Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, on the sidelines of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit and a Caspian Sea environmental summit. The leaders discussed strengthening strategic bilateral cooperation in sectors such as energy, agriculture, and trade.

Addressing the regional crisis, Putin offered Moscow's mediation to help resolve the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. He praised Iran's "epic firmness" and stated that Tehran is making "genuine efforts" to end the conflict. Pezeshkian noted that Tehran and Washington have exchanged new proposals aimed at stopping the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Under a proposed Iranian peace roadmap, Tehran has signaled readiness to restore navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the United States lifting its blockade, easing oil export restrictions, and releasing frozen assets. The meeting also highlighted the deepening military and economic ties between Russia and Iran amidst shifting global dynamics.
