Bulgaria probes arson murder of businessman Vladimir Yanakov
Businessman Vladimir Yanakov was found dead in his home in Bankya after a fire that investigators say was deliberately set to destroy evidence. Police have opened a pre‑trial investigation for intentional homicide under article 116 of the Bulgarian Criminal Code.
Former investigator Andrey Tsvetanov stated that forensic evidence shows a violent death and that the perpetrators attempted to erase traces with fire, oil and water. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev announced that suspects have been identified and the investigation is active.
Simona Peicheva, a former national gymnast, is reported as the last person seen with Yanakov hours before his death. Police are searching for her to question her as a witness; she has publicly said she is cooperating and not evading authorities. Media speculation about a link to cryptocurrency activity remains unproven, and no unpaid personal or corporate debts or public conflicts have been identified for Yanakov.
