Bulgarian businessman murder/arson probe – manhunt issued
Overview
The investigation into the July 2026 killing of 56-year-old entrepreneur Vladimir Yanakov (also known as Vlado Zagato) in Bankya continues. Police determined he was burned alive after a pre-meditated arson attack, with forensic evidence showing violent pre-mortem injuries. Authorities confirmed multiple ignition points and the use of oil, water, and bleach were intended to destroy evidence.
By the end of July, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev announced that suspects had been identified and that the probe was active. Former gymnastics champion Simona Peicheva, the last person seen with Yanakov, was questioned by police. While reports indicated she had a heated argument with Yanakov regarding money hours before his death, investigators have stated her direct involvement in the execution is currently excluded.
In early August, criminologist Ivan Savov and cyber-security expert Lyubomir Tulev suggested the murder may have been motivated by an attempt to obtain Yanakov’s cryptocurrency credentials. However, Interior Minister Demerdzhiev later clarified that the investigation suggests the killing was not a professionally planned execution, but rather a situation that escalated.
By late August, new forensic details emerged. Investigators determined Yanakov was beaten and shot in the head with a combat pistol after confronting five masked, armed men looting his residence. The perpetrators reportedly doused the body with gasoline and scattered bundles of 50,000 euro notes around him. While they left behind investment gold and expensive watches, they fled with a significant haul.
The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has launched a national manhunt for 48-year-old Ivan Tsenkov, known as ‘Ivan Turchina’. Tsenkov has been linked to the murder and is also a suspect in one of Bulgaria’s largest robberies, involving the theft of 5.2 million leva from a cash-in-transit vehicle.
