VLCC tanker market sees $20 billion investment surge

The Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) market is experiencing a massive surge in investment and activity. Over $20 billion has been invested this year in new VLCC orders, with more than 217 vessels ordered in 2026 alone—nearly double the previous year's figures. This trend is driven by skyrocketing charter rates, an aging global fleet, and shifting crude oil trade routes caused by geopolitical tensions.

Greek shipowners are playing a leading role in this expansion, securing orders at Chinese and South Korean shipyards. For instance, Dynacom, led by Giorgos Prokopiou, has established a significant presence through a partnership with Hengli Heavy Industries, involving orders for approximately 20 VLCCs.

Charter rates have reached unprecedented levels due to supply constraints and Middle East instability. According to the brokerage Gibson, key routes have seen dramatic increases: the Persian Gulf–China route (TD3C) exceeded $1.2 million per day, the Oman Gulf–China route (TD34) rose above $750,000, and the Gulf of Mexico–China route (TD22) reached approximately $400,000 per day. Despite navigation difficulties in the Bab el-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz, crude oil movements through the Strait of Hormuz have partially recovered since the spring.
