VN-Index falls 14 points as Vingroup stocks weigh on market

The Vietnamese stock market experienced a downturn on October 12, 2026, with the VN-Index dropping 14.11 points (0.81%) to close at 1,720.98. The decline was primarily driven by heavy selling pressure in large-cap stocks, particularly within the Vingroup ecosystem. Specifically, VIC fell 2.88% and VHM dropped 3.18%, together accounting for a significant portion of the index's loss.

Despite the overall index decline, market breadth remained relatively balanced on the HoSE, with 158 stocks increasing and 154 decreasing. Sectoral performance was highly fragmented: while real estate and oil/gas stocks faced pressure, the banking and steel sectors showed resilience. Notable gainers included HPG, HSG, and NKG in the steel sector, and SHB in the banking sector.

In the broader economic landscape, the State Bank of Vietnam set the central exchange rate at 25,621 VND/USD. Interbank interest rates saw slight increases, and the central bank injected approximately 2,943.40 billion VND into the market through open market operations. Meanwhile, historical data suggests that October is often a volatile month for the VN-Index, with a 46% probability of gains over the last 26 years.

In the banking technology sector, VietinBank is shifting its focus toward building a robust data and AI infrastructure to support the next wave of digital banking services.
